In December 2025, following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, the government announced it would develop a new strategy for built environment professions, trades and occupations.
Now the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has launched a call for evidence to explore how people work during all stages of the building process.
This investigation will cover the entire journey from designers to contractors. The strategy will be published in 2027.

The MHCLG has also unveiled plans to work in partnership with the building control sector to reform the system, in order to protect future growth and maintain standards. This will involve recommendations made by the Building Control Independent Panel.
“The Grenfell tragedy should never have happened, and we remain committed to learning and acting on its failings,” said Samantha Dixon, minister for building safety, fire and democracy.
“High standards, responsibility and safety must underpin the whole building process, upheld by everyone across the profession.
“The measures announced today are an important step to cementing these standards and delivering on our commitment of safe homes fit for the future.”
